FAQs

How to register your interest for a job at Kmart as a team member in one of our stores?

To work as a team member in one of our New Zealand stores, join our growing talent community by visiting our careers site here: https://jobs.kmart.com.au/KMARTAUNZ/

Here you can register your interest so we can reach out to you directly when a role becomes available in a store near you and there is a job match.

I’ve submitted an Expression of Interest – when will I hear back?

If you have registered an Expression of Interest and joined our online talent community then you will be contacted to organise an interview once a vacancy arises in your preferred store that matches your skills, experience and availability. It is difficult to provide an accurate timeframe as each store recruits at different times of the year in different volumes.

How can I make sure I have the best chance of being selected from the talent community for an interview?

It is important that once you create a profile in the talent community that you continue to log in and update your information as your circumstances and preferences change. For example, if you move house, make sure you update your address and nominate new stores that might be closer.

How can I be prepared if I am offered a role?

After you’ve been to an interview in one of our stores, Kmart will require you to provide your Right to Work in New Zealand information. This means you will need to provide a valid passport with any relevant VISAs, a New Zealand Birth Certificate and also a form of photo identification. If you currently don’t have a passport or a birth certificate, it is a good idea to apply for these now. They can take up between 4-8 weeks and any offer of employment will only be made once these have been received.

Does Kmart offer work experience in their stores?

Unfortunately, at this time, Kmart does not offer work experience in our stores. For people looking to start out their retail career, we suggest that you express your interest in working for us by by visiting our careers site here: https://jobs.kmart.com.au/KMARTAUNZ/

Previous retail experience is not required to join Kmart as a team member!

What age can I start working?

In some areas of New Zealand, slightly different laws apply to employees under the age of 18 compared with adult employees.

To find out more information, please visit: https://www.employment.govt.nz/starting-employment/rights-and-responsibilities/young-employees/

What training and support will be provided?

If you are offered a role at Kmart, your first step will be to complete an online induction program which will help you to build your foundational knowledge of Kmart and what it is like to work in a store. After that, you will have an in-store discovery session where you will get to learn everything there is know and learn more about the specific role you will be completing.

What type of shifts are offered? Is it easy to balance study and work?

Kmart has a range of roles and positions to suit all kinds of people. Roles are available all over the store, and we do our best to match you and your interests to the best role that suits you.

Kmart employs thousands and thousands of young people each year, all of who have a range of commitments outside of the workplace, from studying at school and university to other commitments like sports and hobbies. Generally, we can find a role that suits your availability and work expectations. If you are successful, make sure you speak to your Store Manager.

Do you require a resume as part of the recruitment process?

No. We acknowledge that for many young people this may be your first job, and therefore a resume isn’t required.

All we ask is that you register to be a part of our Kmart Community via our careers site: https://jobs.kmart.com.au/KMARTAUNZ/ so we can keep in touch.

Kmart will provide all of the appropriate training on the job, and you don’t need to have undertaken any form of work prior to commencing.

Parents & Carers

We understand this may be the first job and formal employment that the young person in your life is entering into.

Our aim is to create a good experience throughout the process for them, from applying to their first day on the job and within their training.

At Kmart, we acknowledge that we have an important place in assisting young people to grow and develop.

As part of being a responsible employer, Kmart will require parents or caregivers of those under the age of 18 to digitally sign a parental consent form. Your child will be asked, at the time of application, to provide an email address that we can reach you on. Should employment be offered, the form will be sent to you automatically and must be signed in conjunction with the employment contract. Work will only commence once this form is signed.

We have put together some common frequently asked questions to provide you with more information to explore here.
