A Day in The Life of Andrew Riley

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Have you ever applied for a job without actually understanding what the role entails? Have you wished that you could shadow an existing employee at the company to gain a deeper understanding before you commit? If you’re nodding enthusiastically, this article is perfect for you!

We’ve partnered up with our friends at Alsco Uniforms to demystify the role of Service Delivery Person, with Andrew Riley, who works at the New Plymouth branch in Aotearoa! With big-league customers like Fonterra and multiple years in the industry, his daily routine isn’t one you’ll want to miss. In fact, we bet you’ll be ready to apply for a role with Alsco before you even finish the article (and if that’s the case, you can do so at their employer profile)!

Meet One of The Team:

Without further ado, let’s get stuck into Andrew’s interview to learn more:

Thank you for talking to Voices about your day Andrew. Could you start by telling us what time your day typically starts?

“I start at 6am with the truck loaded and ready to go”.

What does your job currently involve?

“I service two of Fonterra’s sites. Firstly, I go to Bridge Street in Eltham, then to Whareroa in Hawera. I go from department to department and pick up all the dirty garments and replace them with clean ones. I have to put the clean ones in the wearer’s locker, or I place them all by size in the cubicle.

I also replace all the mats and linens, etc… on site.

It can take quite a while to do all of this, from Tuesday to Friday. I do have a colleague with me, but on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday we are solo. I can work up to 10 hours a day at times, which includes travel since it takes over an hour to get to some sites.”

What part of the job do you enjoy the most?

“I like to know that the job I have done allows the workers to get on with their day smoothly and continue to do their work seamlessly without having to worry about their garments. I feel that I set them up to have a good day, and well, I aim to do that anyway!”

Is there anything you think Alsco Uniforms does really well?

“We are pretty good in delivering to the customer what they need in a timely fashion. I feel we are providing the best experience to them while meeting their business needs.”

Tell us a little bit about your working background and career with Alsco Uniforms.

“I started working at Alsco Uniforms in February 2022. I was working in a supermarket at the time, stocking shelves and my younger brother and his other friends were working at Alsco – so I felt it was a good option for me. I was excited to try something different and it felt challenging.”

“I have only worked on the Fonterra routes but switch between the Whareroa/Bridge and the Collingwood/Kapuni (Alsco New Plymouth services all four sites every single day, including the weekends and public holidays).”

What sort of people inspire you and who is the most inspiration person you have worked with?

“My mum is a hard worker, and she has brought me up the same way. I like to give 110%, I believe in working smarter, and have very strong work ethics. She has been a great role model for this. I don’t really have someone specific that has inspired me but from every single person that I have worked with, I take something onboard. I have learned and keep learning from everyone, and I use it to mould me into a better worker.”

Would you like to share a little bit about yourself, your interests, and/or your family?

“I am 32 years old, born and bred in New Plymouth. I really like sports, going to the gym, and I enjoy playing basketball. I like being social with others and have new experiences in my life. I’d consider myself quite open minded too. My younger brother works with me which is great! I just really love the Alsco Uniforms team that I work with here in New Plymouth”.
