Early childhood education is more than finger painting and storytime (though those are definitely perks). It’s a career packed with heart, growth, and plenty of ‘aww’ moments. As an early childhood educator, you’re not just playing; you’re shaping minds, building confidence, and creating safe, joyful spaces where tamariki thrive. Whether you’re still in high school or just figuring out your path, early childhood education (and more specifically, a BestStart career) could be your perfect match.

Starting the Day: Setting Up for Success

Curious as to what the life of an early childhood educator might look like? Spoiler alert: it’s not all glue sticks and glitter (although those do make regular appearances). At BestStart, every day is an exciting mix of laughter, learning, creativity, and connection.

From the moment the doors open to the final story at pick-up time, early childhood educators are guiding, supporting, and celebrating tamariki as they explore the world around them. No two days are exactly the same; but that’s part of the magic.

So if you’re dreaming about a future in early childhood education, get comfy and take a peek behind the scenes at BestStart.

What time does the day typically start for an educator at BestStart, and what’s the first thing you do?

A day at BestStart usually begins around 7:00 or 7:30 in the morning, depending on the centre’s opening hours. The first thing educators do is connect with their team, check the daily plan, and review anything that might have changed, such as new activities or special visitors. There’s also time to grab a coffee, do a quick tidy–up, and get into the right headspace.

It’s a calm, positive start before the buzz of the day begins. Educators use this time to mentally prepare, ensuring they’re ready to give each child the attention, energy, and care they deserve.

How do you prepare the learning space and activities before the children arrive?

Before the Tamariki (children) arrive, BestStart educators carefully set up the learning environment to spark curiosity and creativity. Activities are chosen based on the children’s interests and developmental stages – these might include puzzles, art materials, books, blocks, or a sensory play table. Educators also make sure outdoor spaces are safe and inviting for physical play.

Everything is thoughtfully placed to encourage children to explore, problem–solve, and play alongside others. It’s not just about keeping children busy; it’s about creating meaningful learning opportunities through play. This preparation is an important part of setting the tone for a successful day.

How do you greet and settle the children into their day?

When families start arriving, educators welcome each child with a warm smile, a friendly hello, and sometimes a cuddle or handhold if the child needs reassurance. BestStart places a big focus on creating a strong sense of belonging, so greetings are personal and comforting. Every child is different, so settling in is a personal experience.

During a child’s first two weeks at the centre, they usually attend settling visits with their parent/caregiver. These visits can be shorter at first and increase in time, with parents staying initially and then gradually stepping back as their child becomes more comfortable. This gentle transition helps children build trust with their new teachers and feel safe in their new environment. Educators take time to chat with parents or caregivers to understand how the child is feeling and what they may need that day.

Some children are ready to dive straight into play, while others need a slower, more gentle transition. Educators work closely with whanau (families) to make sure every child feels calm, confident, and ready to explore and learn.  The goal is always to create a strong sense of belonging from the moment they walk through the door.

Discover a Career That Supports Growth and Development

At BestStart, educators believe that play is the most powerful way for young children to learn. Activities are designed to be fun, engaging, and rich in learning. A typical day might include messy sensory play with water or slime, group singing, storytelling, arts and crafts, pretend cooking, building with blocks, or exploring the outdoors.

Play is guided by what the children are interested in; for example, if a group of children are curious about bugs, the centre might set up a mini–insect exploration station.

Educators use play to build skills like communication, problem–solving, and cooperation without children even realising they’re learning. BestStart is also proud of the cultural diversity in our centres, and this is reflected in the experiences offered throughout the year. Children learn about and take part in special celebrations like Matariki, Diwali, Lunar New Year, ANZAC Day, and more. These events are meaningful ways to build understanding, respect, and connection.

Families are often invited to share their cultures, traditions, music, and food, making the centre a true reflection of the community around it. Every day offers something new, and children are encouraged to explore and express themselves through play in ways that are unique to who they are.

Supporting children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development

Educators at BestStart support each child’s development by creating strong, trusting relationships and using everyday moments as learning opportunities. Social development happens when children learn to take turns, share, and work through conflicts with help from their teachers.

Emotional development is supported by helping children name their feelings and learn to manage big emotions in a safe space. Cognitive growth (or brain development) comes through activities like puzzles, storytelling, counting games, and encouraging children to ask questions. Educators pay close attention to each child’s unique needs and progress, helping them grow into confident, capable learners at their own pace.

What does a typical moment of joy or achievement look like in your day?

Joy can come in so many ways throughout the day. It might be when a child says a new word for the first time, or finally feels brave enough to join group time after weeks of watching from the sidelines.

At BestStart, moments of achievement are often small but incredibly meaningful. Educators celebrate these milestones, whether it’s putting on shoes independently, making a new friend, or completing a tricky puzzle. These moments are shared with the child, their peers, and their families, making them feel proud and valued. Seeing the pride in a child’s face is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

BestStart’s Tips for a Successful Career

Working in early childhood education takes more than just a love of children, although that’s a great place to start! Educators at BestStart need patience, creativity, and strong communication skills. Being organised and adaptable is also important because no two days are the same.

A successful educator is someone who can stay calm under pressure, listen carefully, and respond to the needs of children with empathy and care. It also helps to be playful and have a good sense of humour. If you’re someone who finds joy in helping others grow and wants to make a real difference, this career could be for you.

Do I Need Qualifications For an Early Childhood Career?

At BestStart, qualified early childhood educators are paid in line with the Pay Parity Salary Steps set by the Ministry of Education. This ensures fair and transparent pay that increases with experience and qualifications. For example, someone just starting with a Level 4 ECE qualification earns less than a teacher with a full teaching registration and years of experience, but there’s a clear pathway to grow your salary over time.

BestStart also supports further study and development, offers regular training, and provides perks like discounted childcare and professional learning. It’s a career where you’re supported to grow and be recognised for your skills.

Advice for High School Students

“If you’re even slightly interested in early childhood education, give it a go!”

Try volunteering at a local childcare centre, doing work experience, or talking to people in the industry. It’s a career that’s all about connection, creativity, and care. One of the best things about working in early learning is that you’re making a real difference in the lives of children during the most important years of their development. It can be challenging at times, but the rewards – the hugs, the laughter, the little wins – are totally worth it.

“If you love helping others and want a job with purpose, ECE (early childhood education) is an amazing path to consider.”
