March 8th is nearly here – and it means one significant thing:
As we celebrate this vital day, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the journey towards gender equality and the importance of inclusion in every aspect of our lives. Especially our workplaces!
This year’s theme, #InspireInclusion, reminds us of the power of diversity in shaping our world.
What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrates the achievements of women while advocating for gender equality and women’s rights worldwide.
Celebrating IWD holds particular significance in New Zealand as it underscores the ongoing journey towards gender equality and cultural inclusivity for women.
In a nation deeply rooted in the values of fairness and respect, this day serves as a reminder of the strides made in empowering women from diverse backgrounds.
It also highlights the imperative to address systemic barriers and biases that hinder their full participation in society.
Embracing the richness of cultural diversity and promoting equal opportunities for women strengthens our communities’ fabric and fosters a more inclusive society for all.
#InspireInclusion: A Look at This Year’s Theme
Inclusion is creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. This year’s theme of #InspireInclusion is a rallying call for all of us to look around and see where we could be doing more.
To inspire inclusion in our schools, workplaces, and communities, we can:
- Foster a culture of respect and acceptance: Do your bit to be inclusive, even in small ways. Educate yourself and spend time learning more about others.
- Amplify marginalised voices and experiences: Some people have more dominant voices and more opportunities to use them! But how can you create space for others who might not have these opportunities?
- Challenge stereotypes and biases: When you hear biased phrases or ideas, call them out—even asking, ‘What do you mean by that?’ or ‘Why do you think that?’ can cause someone to reflect. This small thing can create a lot of change – and more inclusive spaces for all.
